The New Heavyweight: John Deere’s 2026 Diesel ZTrak Lineup
John Deere Z994M Z997M Z997R Z998R Literature
The landscape of professional mowing is shifting. John Deere has officially pulled the curtain back on its Model Year 2026 Diesel ZTrak Mowers, and the headliner is a machine that redefines what "wide-area" productivity looks like in a zero-turn package.
Whether you are managing massive municipal properties or tight commercial complexes, the new lineup—consisting of the Z997M, Z997R, and the powerhouse Z998R—introduces tech that was once reserved for high-end golf course equipment.
The Z998R: 100 Inches of Precision
The undisputed star of the 2026 release is the Z998R. It is the most productive ZTrak ever built, featuring a massive 100-inch (254-cm) cutting width.
What makes it unique isn't just the size, but the E-Cut™ Wing Mower Decks. While the 61-inch center deck is shaft-driven, the two 22-inch wings are powered by electric motors. This allows for incredible versatility:
-
On-the-Fly Adjustments: Operators can fold one or both wings in just nine seconds to navigate narrow passes or obstacles.
-
Articulating Decks: The wings follow the ground's contour by moving 20 degrees up or down, preventing scalping on uneven turf.
-
Simple Transport: Despite its 100-inch cut, the wings fold up so the machine fits on standard trailers used for fixed-deck mowers.
Tech-Forward Command: The R-Trim Experience
For 2026, the Z997R and Z998R models receive a significant cockpit overhaul designed to reduce operator fatigue and increase machine intelligence.
-
Touchscreen Interface: A new 4.3-inch color LED touchscreen acts as the mower's brain. It allows for customizable "Mow Modes" (Eco, Cut Quality, or Productivity), tracks fuel and diagnostics, and even lets fleet managers set PIN-protected user profiles.
-
Drive-by-Wire Steering: Mechanical linkages are out. The new R-trim models use electronic steering for smoother control and less physical effort over long shifts.
-
Comfort First: A high-back air-suspension seat comes standard on the R-series, adjustable for weight, height, and lumbar support to keep operators fresh.
Connected Fleets
Connectivity is no longer an "extra." Every 2026 Diesel ZTrak comes standard with a factory-installed JDLink™ M Modem. This connects the mower directly to the John Deere Operations Center, allowing owners to monitor location, engine hours, and maintenance needs remotely.

The Z998R ZTrak Mower leverages E-Cut electric-drive technology, which John Deere pioneered for golf mowers over 15 years ago. The Z998R ZTrak Mower’s 61-in. (155-cm) center deck is shaft driven and its two 22-in. (56-cm) E-Cut Wing Mower Decks are driven by electric motors. The E-Cut Wing Mower Deck electric motors are powered by an engine-mounted 56-V 240-amp alternator.
In nine seconds, by pressing buttons on the steering levers, the operator can convert from a productivity-focused 100-in. (254-cm) cut width to 60-in. (152-cm) or 80-in. (203-cm) cutting widths as landscaping obstacles require. In addition to providing multiple mowing widths, electrically driven wing-mower decks overcome belt alignment limitations and reduce shielding, which simplifies cleaning. E-Cut Wing Mower decks articulate 20 degrees up or down to follow uneven contours.
The E-Cut Wing Mower Deck electric motors are designed to last, even in difficult mowing environments. The motor’s anodized housing is durable and has even been submersion tested to ensure the motors are sealed from elements.
John Deere’s extensive testing processes led to the development of serviceable motors. In the event of a severe blade impact, the lower-cost and serviceable spindle (A) and lower motor housing (B) are designed to fail and protect the expensive components of the drive motor.
The new model year 2026 Z997R and Z998R ZTrak Mowers are equipped with an advanced 4.3-in. (10.9-cm) full-color LED touchscreen, which provides unprecedented control and information.
Similar to mobile device screens, the touchscreen contains multi-colored pixels. Unlike segment-based displays, a touchscreen can be extensively customized, which enables software-defined menus and supports multiple languages including English, Spanish, German, French, and Italian. The touchscreen is bright so it can be read in sunlight and backlit for low-light conditions.
The touchscreen is designed and tested to withstand the elements. It is IP66 rated, indicating it is dust-tight and protected from water.
The touchscreen provides the operator with:
- Mower deck status
- Stop, service, park brake, power-take-off, seat switch, and diesel particulate filter regeneration indicators
- Fuel level
- Hours
- Connectivity signal strength
The touchscreen can be used to adjust machine settings:
- Customizable mow mode - Choose between eco, cut quality, and productivity modes
- LoadMatch™ - Slows the mower under heavy cutting load, providing consistent cut quality
- Maximum ground speed
The touchscreen can also be used for diagnostics.
While new mowers are factory-configured with a single full-access user profile, fleet operators may choose to tailor menu access to the unique needs of owners, crew supervisors, and operators. Operators may even have their own PIN that remembers their unique language and machine settings. Learn more about user profile access menus in the touchscreen display feature story.
Switch controls
On Z997R and Z998R models, the key switch and switches for auto throttle (A), center deck control (B), and transport (C) are located near the touchscreen display.
Auto throttle - When the PTO is off, the auto-throttle switch is used to adjust engine speed. Low speed is used when maneuvering the mower in tight locations like loading on a trailer. High speed is used for transport. When the PTO is engaged, the engine runs at full throttle, and the auto-throttle switch is used to limit maximum mowing speed. The low-speed position improves precision while trimming and high speed enables full mowing speed in open areas.
Center deck control (Z998R) - Used to shut off the center mower deck with the PTO engaged; useful when the operator wants to mow with one or both wing decks without the center deck creating noise and stirring dust.
Transport switch (Z998R) - Raises all mower decks to transport position or lowers them to mow at full width.
The new model year 2026 Diesel ZTrak Mowers are equipped with comfort and convenience handles built into the steering levers.
Z997M - Similar to the model year 2025 Z997R, the Z997M has two steering-lever buttons. The button on the left steering lever is used to raise the mower deck. The yellow button on the right steering lever shuts off the PTO. The dash-mounted PTO switch needs to be cycled to reengage the PTO.
Z997R - The Z997R has three steering-lever buttons. The left steering lever has a button (A) to raise the mower deck. The lift button can be pressed momentarily to raise the deck over an obstacle. The left and right steering levers each have a yellow PTO button (B). Press both buttons at the same time to engage the PTO. Press either button to shut off the PTO.
Z998R - The Z998R has five steering-lever buttons. The Z998R includes the same buttons as the Z997R model, plus there is a button (C) on each lever to raise or lower that side’s E-Cut Wing Mower Deck. Similar to a garage door, each deck lifts or lowers when its button is pressed. On the Z998R model, when the deck raise button (A) is pressed all three decks are raised to clear an obstacle.
The blades on the wing decks automatically stop when the decks are raised. If the PTO is engaged, the wing decks automatically start when the wing mower decks are lowered.
The new Z997R and Z998R ZTrak Mowers are equipped with a high-back air-suspension seat. The 24-in. (61-cm) high-back seat features green accents and an embroidered John Deere logo. The seat’s suspension can be adjusted to the operator’s weight and height using a paddle. The seat’s damper, fore-aft position, fore-aft suspension, back angle, lumbar, and armrests are also adjustable
The new model year 2026 Diesel ZTrak Mowers have an intuitive and ergonomically placed pin map height-of-cut system. The system features 1- to 5.5-in. (3.8- to 12.7-cm) cutting heights, 0.25-in. (0.64-cm) increments, and a transport lock.
On a Z998R ZTrak Mower, keeping the cut height of the wing decks matching the center deck is fast and clean, and does not involve relocating greasy spacers.
The front wing deck caster wheels use a turn-dial system (A). Simply remove the cap and magnetic locking key and turn the dial. The front caster shaft is engraved with height-of-cut markings that indicate the cut height.
The rear mower deck wheels use a spring-locking pin (B). Simply move the pin to adjust the height. The shaft is also engraved with height-of-cut markings.
The entire system is designed to be adjusted without tools in the field. In the shop, a ½-in. racket or power driver can be used to speed adjustments.
The new model year 2026 Diesel ZTrak Mowers have an intuitive integrated park brake that is automatically applied when steering levers are stowed outward and disengaged when the steering control levers are placed into the operating position.
The new model year 2026 diesel ZTrak Mowers have a redesigned cooling system that relocates the radiator to the center of the mower. Relocating the radiator and cooling air intake prevents debris from accumulating on the rear screen and moves the warm air exit away from the operator. A removeable radiator screen can be cleaned, and provides access to the radiator, oil, and fuel coolers.
